Celia Mathews - Chairwoman

Celia is our newly elected chairwoman for the next choral year. She trained as a biochemist/microbiologist and worked in research and industry. She then trained in sales and marketing for an international diagnostics company. To relax and take her mind off technical and commercial subjects, Celia loves to sing and she sings first tenor for the Haverhill Singers. When tenor numbers are low, she also makes guest appearances for the Brighton Singers, Celia's home town.

Celia joined Haverhill Singers in September 2021 and her most memorable moment so far is performing the musically and lyrically challenging 'Rejoice in the Lamb' by Benjamin Britten, at the Haverhill Singers' Spring concert 2022. This is especially because we received praise from one of the visiting professional soloists for our acquittal!

Hugh Conway - Musical Director

We are delighted to introduce Hugh Conway as our new Musical Director. Hugh brings with him a wealth of experience across both the arts and industry, blending his professional background with his lifelong passion for music.
A highly accomplished individual, Hugh co-founded and developed a thriving enterprise. Alongside his business achievements, he has shared his knowledge as a teacher of Physics, Maths and Computer Science, demonstrating a natural ability to inspire and communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively.
Music has always remained at the heart of Hugh’s life. A trained opera singer, he has performed professionally as a classical vocalist, studying at university on a choral scholarship. As an experienced teacher and performer of voice, piano, violin, and flute, Hugh’s repertoire spans classical, musical theatre, and jazz.
For the past ten years he has worked as one of the Musical Directors of the Halstead Community Choir and, more recently, has led the formation of the Halstead Dementia Friendly Choir.
Now, as Musical Director of Haverhill Singers, Hugh is dedicated to nurturing excellence in choral performance and guiding the ensemble toward new artistic heights. He aims to inspire both singers and audiences alike through concerts that celebrate the great choral works of past and present.
